Acknowledgements

This edition has been produced with the help of a number of people and institutions. The National Library of Australia loaned its copy of Bengala as the basis for this text, and the Eton Library made available material in the William Cory Papers. In particular, I am grateful to John Thompson of the National Library, to Paul Quarrie of the Eton Library and to Jeff Doyle who went to Eton to examine the papers there. Patricia Clarke generously gave me access to her research, including the location of the Sydney Morning Herald review. The Australian Dictionary of National Biography Centre checked Vidal's death certificate. Isabelle Meyer, Patricia Barton, Loes Slattery, Philippa Wicks and Nan Albinski contributed background information for the Introduction and Explanatory Notes. Edmund Campion, Philip Butterss, Gillian Russell, Peter Shillingsburg and Elaine Zinklian also gave me advice and information on their areas of expertise. The Colonial Texts Series Editorial Committee of Paul Eggert, Harry Heseltine and Joy Hooton gave close attention to the edition at each stage. But the major preparation of word-processing and formatting the text was performed by Margaret McNally of the English Department, University College.
