Invocation

GREAT Omnipresence! Pulse of star and clod!
Rhythm of ocean! Beating heart of me,
No lightest touch of mine but touches Thee,
Unknown! Unknowable! whom men call God!
Lion and lamb Thy hidden Law declare,
Python and lily, dewdrop in the grass,
And the great suns that prowl with feet of brass
About the inverted jungles of the air!

So near, and yet so far for faiths that wane,
For love whose starved lamp, failing, flickers low;
Speak! though Thy thunders shake the riven skies!
Speak! though Thy lightnings blind me! so mine eyes
Have seen the Vision! so my heart shall know. …
And knowing, rest; nor grieve nor doubt again!
